hese pictures reflect a function over form breeding strategy, all these dogs were bred for what they could do not to satisfy some twisted standard. A working dogs function is first and foremost to do the work for which it was bred. If a standard requires a change in the dogs form that will prevent them from doing their job, the standard is wrong. Nature does not beauty breed, wild predators are selected by their ability to survive and reproduce. Most of them are beautiful animals, without the insane distortions we’ve inflicted on dogs. Function over form naturally produces better form and function.

Este impresionante ejemplar de intenso manto rojo fue padre de dos notabilísimos perros criados por el propio Marqués de Londonderry, de nombre: Wisdom of Wynyard y Jeanette of Wynyard "Jeanie" (ambos hijos dee Ch. "Simba" y "Fruach of Ranald"). "Jeanie" estuvo considerada como uno de los "pilares" de la Raza y resultó la flamante ganadora del CC de Hembras en Crufts durante dos años consecutivos (1935 y 36), siendo propiedad de la Sra. de J. Murray Smith, co-fundadora de la "British Bullmastiff League", quien afirmó de la Raza que entre sus principales características estaban "el ser extremadamente inteligentes, de buen temperamento y cariñosos con los niños; excelentes guardianes y fácilmente adiestrables para la caza, caracterizados también por un extraordinario olfato y una boca muy suave. Son excepcionalmente obedientes también y se adaptan a la vida en el campo y ciudad y su aspecto y buenas maneras les hacen ser muy admirados".

WISDOM fue propiedad del conocido pintor L. Edwards. Sin embargo no fue Ch. Simba el único Bullmastiff en manos de de un destacado miembro de la realeza Britanica. En el año 35, S.A.R. Gloucester era el orgulloso propietario del macho de nombreHussar Stingo; de manto arena e intensa mascara, cuyo "handler" en exposiciones era el conocido criador Basil Kennedy, primo del anterior y propietario del chenil Millbrook. De sus instalaciones dijo así Phyllis Robson, cronista destacada de las revistas especializadas de la época: "... hay habitaciones separadas para los partos y para las hembras en celo y también para los perros de raza Toy", detallando además que estaban situadas en catorce acres de terreno y que eran el "no va mas de la limpieza"; Phyllis Robson contó también en ése artículo que durante su visita había tenido la oportunidad de ver allí al conocido Ch. Simba, ganador de seis CC de Campeonato y padre de dos campeones, que "está disponible como semental público".

Claro que, llegados a éste punto, no puedo dejar de citar al primer Bullmastiff que ganó un "Challenge Certificate" y que resultó ser el primer campeón de la Raza en su país de origen, ganando además la Clase Machos en Crufts en el año 1928: Ch. Tiger Prince (Tiger Torus x Princess Poppy, Cr. y Pr. Vic Smith), contemporáneo de la ya citada Ch. Farcroft Silvo y padre, luego, de importantes ejemplares del afijo "Prizdor".

Contemporáneo de ambos fue también el Ch. Roger of the Fens (Don Juan x Luzlow Princess), que fue padre de ocho campeones británicos y que está en el origen de muchos Pedigríes modernos, de color arena y con estupendas angulaciones, propiedad del Sr. H.V.E. Toney.

Conviene, además, ya que estamos situados en los primeros años de auge de la Raza en su país de origen, que hagamos un breve repaso de otros ejemplares punteros de la primera década de éxitos en las Exposiciones de todo el país (1925-1935) antes de pasar a épocas más cercanas a nosotros.

Tales son, por ejemplo, el macho Ch. Athos (Ch. Farcroft Fidelity x Noble), padre del ya citado Ch. Simba; la Ch. Bubbles (Ch. Farcroft Felons Fraeyeur x Lady Betty of Bowdencourt).

Considerada por la Sra. Dorothy Nash, propietaria del afijo "Le Tasull", como una de las hembras más significativas de su época; el Ch. Tenz (Vindictive Prince x Princess Ursula), que fue propiedad de la Sra. Mullin y fundador de la conocida estirpe de los Bullmastiff de Mulorna, de los que luego hablare con más detenimiento y que resultó ganador de tres CC y B.O.Bs en tres Exposiciones consecutivas (Birmingham, Crufts y Cheltenham) lo que en su época constituyó todo un récord. De él dijo su propietaria que era "un perro sumamente inteligente, con una actitud maravillosa".

Beppo of Bullmas, quien ganó un total de 22 CCs durante su carrera en Exposiciones británicas y que, según los expertos de entonces, hizo mejorar mucho las cabezas en sus descendientes, junto con su hermano de camada Ch. Billy of Bullmas, ambos hijos del ya citado Ch. Roger of the Fenns y de la preciosaCh. Wendy of Bullmas, todos ellos criados por Cyril Leeke.

Bubbles) y su hermano Bartonville Grand Parade; la impresionante Red Bell of Conneath de subido color rojo, de la que se dijo entonces que era una de las más "bonitas" y también los Ch. Springwell Major, Ch. Springwell Simba y el hermano de ambos Ch. Millbrook Peter, que por ser propiedad de Basil Kennedy constó con ése nombre a petición suya, todos los cuales eran hijos del Ch. Roger of the Fenns y fueron criados por los Richardson.

A lot has been said and published about the History of the Breed throughout the years. There are many books, old and new, that specifically refer to it, written for Christina de Lima-Netto, EL BULLMASTIFF and EL GRAN LIBRO DEL BULLMASTIFF Y MASTIFF; in fact in this one I devote some 120+ pages to the History from its origins to the present times, and to my best knowledge the amount of information referred in it is the largest, when compared to the rest of the books on the Breed, originally written in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish. Therefore, if you are familiar with Spanish I truly recommend that you read EL GRAN LIBRO DEL BULLMASTIFF Y MASTIFF, since its 400 pages and 200+ photos will certainly add to your best knowledge of the Breed.

Therefore, here it goes, since there are indeed a few aspects I would like to emphasize, as these are in my modest opinion the ones that explain what Bullmastiffs have come to be in the present time.

It is known that dogs similar to what modern Bullmastiffs are like nowadays have existed for centuries; where they came from is still a matter of high discussion but what matters is not the geographical origin, but the reason for which they became so important to men.

Dogs of immense fortitude and strength were used in the past to fight different beasts, bulls included, as a divertimento for the wealthy and also for the ordinary people, but at a point in time this bloody entertainment was banned, first in England and later in the Iberian Peninsula, where the fiercest dogs were said to live. In Spain and Portugal dogs of this kind, called “Perros de Toros” (literally translated as bull-dogs) were used until the mid of the XIX century and, in fact, there is a very interesting large size painting that portrays the patio of the ancient Madrid bullfight ring, where two dogs that are very much alike modern bullmastiffs are depicted.

This work of art, “Patio de caballos de la antigua plaza de Madrid, antes de la corrida” was painted by Spanish Manuel Castellano (1828-1880) in year 1854 and it is known to portray many people who were consummate experts in the Bullfight tradition and many contemporary bullfighters, for which there is no reason to believe that the two dogs (a brindle and a fawn red) that appear in the left hand corner, weren’t also portrayed from real.

The fact is that when you see this immense painting (approx. m) that is shown at one of the annex buildings to the Prado Museum, in Madrid, you cannot deny the similarities of those dogs, to modern Bullmastiffs; indeed, taken that this masterpiece was painted over one hundred and fifty years ago, those two dogs look a lot more like the Bullmastiffs we see today, than the contemporary British “Night Dogs”. I know that not too many people will be happy with this remark, but the evidence cannot be denied.

Whatever the case, the Bullmastiff was recognized as such under this name, in year 1924, by the British Kennel Club and it is said to be a breed of British origin. Like I said at the very beginning if you are fluent enough in Spanish, I invite you to read what I have to say about the Breed, its origins, present and future in both books off Christina de Lima-Netto EL BULLMASTIFF and EL GRAN LIBRO DEL BULLMASTIFF Y MASTIFF. I am sure you none of the two will deceive you and, as a matter of fact, Douglas B. Oliff, one of the most important historians of the breed and the molossers in general, wrote a preface to it. As a matter of fact, while writing my book, where out of the over 400 pages, there are some 100 devoted to the search of the origins of the breed, she had the immense honour of being able to go through Douglas’ scrap book, a privilege granted to a very few, for which I am very grateful.
